“Semantic algorithms for Healthcare, behind the scenes of an innovation” is the theme of an interesting article written by Vieri Emiliani – Innovation and Solutions – Artexe, for the portal Agenda Digitale. Dwelling on the problems faced by Digital Health in its development process, Emiliani focused in particular on digital management of health data. The direction should be to “put the analysis of care processes at the centre and to produce solutions that facilitate the work of healthcare professionals, making the processes more efficient”. One solution could be semantic algorithms, “that set of natural language processing and knowledge representation techniques which allow automatically extracting information from unstructured texts”. The Maps/Artexe group has been dealing with this for years, “combining machine learning techniques for text analysis and charts for clinical use, for automating the extraction and automatic coding of concepts contained in clinical texts, their structuring and classification”.
A practical example is represented by Clinika and its applications, including:
- SegnalER: a platform created with the aim of fully managing the process of reports referring to the safety of treatments and to claims in the health structures of Emilia-Romagna, within the framework of systems for the analysis of regional clinical risk.
- Clinika VAP: a system for assessing the appropriateness of prescriptions for outpatient specialist visits, able to extract the relevant clinical concepts contained in the working diagnosis and to verify, by crossing the medical prescription with appropriately codified prescription protocols, the appropriateness of the prescribed examination and of the requested priority.
- Clinika Studio: a solution for defining and monitoring cohorts of patients, through which to extract clues from the various clinical-health repositories in order to identify subjects at risk of chronic diseases and to enrol them in personalised prevention, monitoring and treatment paths.
